According to ezinereligion, in 2007, Jamaica was home to approximately 2.7 million people. The majority of the population resided in the urban areas, with Kingston being its most populous city. The economy of Jamaica was largely reliant on tourism and agriculture, with bauxite and alumina being its largest exports. Foreign relations were largely positive due to Jamaica’s involvement in international organizations such as the United Nations and its membership in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Politically, Jamaica was a two-party democracy headed by Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller. In 2007, Simpson-Miller’s party won a landslide victory that saw her remain in power until 2011 when she lost her re-election bid to Andrew Holness.

Jamaica. On March 18, the cricket-loving Jamaicans were shocked by the death of 58-year-old Briton Robert “Bob” Woolmer in a Kingston hotel room. Woolmer was coach of Pakistan cricket team and had previously played in England’s national team. The first police investigation found that Woolmer had been strangled to death. The day before, the Pakistani cricket team had bitterly and surprisingly been knocked out of the World Cup, held on some of the Caribbean islands, including Jamaica. A wealth of speculation was raised that corruption, revenge or agreements on settled matches would be the motive for the murder.
- According to abbreviationfinder: JA is the 2-letter acronym for the country of Jamaica.
According to CountryAAH, Kingston is the capital city of Jamaica. The country’s police were assisted by British detectives in the search for the killer. However, three later investigations indicated that the cricket coach had actually died of a natural death, probably from heart problems. The police accepted these conclusions and closed the preliminary investigation. However, the Jamaican pathologist who performed the autopsy of the dead body maintained that Woolmer was murdered – now strangled and poisoned.
Jamaica’s Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller announced in July elections to Parliament on August 27. During the election campaign, the leaders of the country’s two major parties – Simpson Miller for the Social Democratic Government Party PNP (People’s National Party) and Bruce Golding for the bourgeois opposition party JLP (Jamaica’s workers’ party) – issued a joint plea that the gang violence that is inflating during electoral riots Jamaica would cease. The street gang has ties to the political parties and are forcibly trying to influence how the residents of their housing area vote. Before the appeal from the politicians came, at least two people had been killed, several injured and arrested in gang-related violence before the election. The later phase of the electoral movement became relatively calm with a total of about ten dead.
After Hurricane Dean hit the island on August 19, the Election Commission decided to postpone Election Day until September to give everyone an opportunity to participate. By then, the hurricane had rendered some 300,000 Jamaicans homeless and caused major damage to the infrastructure. The election was postponed to September 3.
The election day was quite calm and the results turned out to be extremely even. JLP received 50.1 percent of the vote compared to 49.8 percent for PNP. The votes had to be recalculated at the request of PNP but the result stood. JLP took home 33 of the 60 mandates while the remaining mandate went to PNP. After 18 years with PNP in office, the change of power was a fact. JLP leader Bruce Golding was elected new Prime Minister. His new government was installed on September 11.
