Kiribati 2007

According to ezinereligion, in 2007, Kiribati had a population of just over 100,000 people. The economy was largely based on fishing and tourism, with foreign aid from Australia and New Zealand playing an important role. Foreign relations were mainly focused on maintaining good relations with the countries that provided financial assistance to the government. Politics in Kiribati during 2007 was characterized by strong support for President Anote Tong and his administration’s focus on economic development and environmental protection. While there were some protests against the government’s policies, they were largely peaceful in nature. The country held its fourth multiparty elections that year, which resulted in a victory for President Tong’s party and his re-election for a second term. The election was generally seen as free and fair by international observers.

In the October 17 presidential election, incumbent President Anote Tong is re-elected. Parliament appoints the presidential candidates, and all four came from the BTK-MKP coalition. The two candidates of the opposition were not nominated in Parliament’s closed ballot. A few days before the election, supporters of the opposition held a peaceful demonstration in the Bairiki district of the capital Tarawa to show their dissatisfaction.

After the election, Anote Tong said that one of his main tasks was to create jobs, especially for well-educated young people returning to Kiribati after studying abroad.

HUMAN AND ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY

Island state of Oceania. At the 2000 census the population of the archipelago was 84,494 residents (87,000 according to a 2004 estimate), spread over an area of just 811 km 2. About 40 % of the total population is concentrated in the conurbation of the capital, located in the atoll of Tarawa. The rate of demographic increase, even if declining, remains high: in the period 2000-2005 it was 1.8% on average per year. The death rate is progressively decreasing, while the birth rate has remained substantially unchanged.

From an economic point of view, the country is largely conditioned by international financial aid (in particular from Japan), which contribute to the formation of the GDP for approximately 50 %. The considerable distance from large markets makes the prospects for economic growth very difficult, supported almost exclusively by the sale of fishing licenses in territorial waters and by the remittances of emigrants. Given the distance from the main flows of international tourism, the latter activity is still underdeveloped, but its expansion prospects seem to be very favorable, and for some years the number of visitors has been increasing slightly (the sector contributes about one fifth to the formation of GDP).

Air connections are difficult; however, particular beneficial effects are expected from the inclusion of Fanning atoll among the cruise destinations. The local population lives from fishing (especially tuna fishing) and agriculture (coconut palm and copra). A singular export item but interesting from a quantitative point of view is represented by the trade in tropical fish. The archipelago poses a serious environmental threat, since, if the feared rise in the level of the oceans occurred as a result of global warming, the islands would be completely submerged, since their maximum altitude is a few meters above sea level.
