According to ezinereligion, in 2007, Botswana had an estimated population of over 2 million people, composed of multiple ethnic groups including Tswana, Kalanga and Basarwa. The official language was English but several other languages were also spoken. The economy was largely based on diamond mining and tourism, as well as exports of beef and copper. In terms of foreign relations, Botswana had close ties with its neighbor South Africa and maintained diplomatic relations with several other countries such as the United States, United Kingdom and Zimbabwe. Politically, Botswana was a constitutional democracy led by President Festus Mogae since 1998 until his resignation in 2008.
