According to ezinereligion, in 2007, Brunei had an estimated population of over 400,000 people, composed of multiple ethnic groups including Malay, Chinese and Indigenous. The official language was Malay but several other languages were also spoken. The economy was largely based on oil and gas production and exports, as well as tourism and financial services. In terms of foreign relations, Brunei had close ties with its neighbor Malaysia and maintained diplomatic relations with several other countries such as the United States, United Kingdom and China. Politically, Brunei was a traditional monarchy led by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah since 1967 until his death in 2019.
