According to ezinereligion, in 2007, Burundi had an estimated population of over 8 million people, composed of multiple ethnic groups including Hutu, Tutsi and Twa. The official language was Kirundi but several other languages were also spoken. The economy was largely based on agriculture, manufacturing and services, as well as exports of coffee and tea. In terms of foreign relations, Burundi had close ties with its neighbor Rwanda and maintained diplomatic relations with several other countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and France. Politically, Burundi was a presidential republic led by President Pierre Nkurunziza since 2005 until he resigned in 2020.
