According to ezinereligion, in 2007, Chad had an estimated population of over 10.5 million people, composed of multiple ethnic groups including Arab, Kanembou and Sara. The official languages were French and Arabic but several other languages were also spoken. The economy was largely based on subsistence agriculture as well as exports of crude oil, cotton and livestock. In terms of foreign relations, Chad had close ties with its neighbors Cameroon, Central African Republic and Sudan and maintained diplomatic relations with several other countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and France. Politically, Chad was a semi-presidential republic led by President Idriss Déby since 1990 until his death in 2021.
