Custer County is a county located in south-central Colorado. It was established in 1877 and consists of 823 square miles of rugged terrain including the Wet Mountain Valley, the Wet Mountain Range, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The county seat is Westcliffe and its population as of 2019 was 4,541. According to theinternetfaqs.com, the area has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s when it was part of the Ute Nation. In 1873, gold was discovered along the Arkansas River and miners began to flock to the area. The area quickly grew into a bustling mining town with a population of over 5,000 people by 1880.
