According to ezinereligion, in 2007, Comoros had an estimated population of over 800,000 people, composed of multiple ethnic groups including Antalote, Cafre and Makoa. The official language was Comorian but several other languages were also spoken. The economy was largely based on exports of ylang-ylang (a type of tree), vanilla and cloves. In terms of foreign relations, Comoros had close ties with its neighbors Madagascar and Mozambique and maintained diplomatic relations with several other countries such as France, the United Kingdom and South Africa. Politically, Comoros was a presidential republic led by President Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi since 2006 until his term ended in 2011.
