The official languages were Greek and Turkish but several other languages were also spoken. The economy was largely based on exports of copper, citrus fruits and pharmaceuticals. In terms of foreign relations, Cyprus had close ties with its neighbors Greece and Turkey and maintained diplomatic relations with several other countries such as the United Kingdom, Russia and the United States. Politically, Cyprus was a presidential republic led by President Tassos Papadopoulos since 2003 until his term ended in 2008.
