According to ezinereligion, in 2007, the Democratic Republic of the Congo had an estimated population of over 60 million people, composed mainly of Bantu and Pygmy ethnic groups. The official language was French but several other languages were also spoken. The economy was largely based on exports of minerals such as copper and cobalt. In terms of foreign relations, the Democratic Republic of the Congo had close ties with its neighbors Angola, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda and maintained diplomatic relations with several other countries such as France, the United Kingdom and Russia. Politically, the Democratic Republic of the Congo was a semi-presidential republic led by President Joseph Kabila since 2001 until his term ended in 2011.
