According to ezinereligion, in 2007, the population of Djibouti was estimated to be over 800,000 people, composed mainly of Somali and Afar ethnic groups. The official language was French but several other languages were also spoken. The economy was largely based on exports of livestock and services such as port operations. In terms of foreign relations, Djibouti had close ties with its neighbors Ethiopia and Somalia and maintained diplomatic relations with several other countries such as France, the United Kingdom and the United States. Politically, Djibouti was a semi-presidential republic led by President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh since 1999 until his term ended in 2021.
