According to ezinereligion, in 2007, the population of East Timor was estimated to be over 1 million people, composed mainly of Austronesian and Papuan ethnic groups. The official language was Portuguese but several other languages were also spoken. The economy was largely based on exports of coffee, timber and sandalwood. In terms of foreign relations, East Timor had close ties with its neighbors Indonesia, Australia and Malaysia and maintained diplomatic relations with several other countries such as Japan, China and the United States. Politically, East Timor was a parliamentary democracy led by Prime Minister José Ramos-Horta since 2006 until his term ended in 2018.
