According to ezinereligion, in 2007, the population of Egypt was estimated to be over 79 million people, composed mainly of ethnic Egyptians and Bedouin Arabs. The official language was Arabic but several other languages were also spoken. The economy was largely based on exports of petroleum products, cotton and remittances from Egyptians living abroad. In terms of foreign relations, Egypt had close ties with its neighbors Israel, Jordan and Libya and maintained diplomatic relations with several other countries such as the United States, France and the United Kingdom. Politically, Egypt was a presidential republic led by President Hosni Mubarak since 1981 until his term ended in 2011.
