According to ezinereligion, in 2007, Gambia had a population of around 1.7 million people and its economy was largely based on agriculture and tourism. It had strong foreign relations with many countries in Africa, as well as with other countries around the world. Politically, Gambia was a presidential republic and the government was led by President Yahya Jammeh who had been in power since 1994. The country was not part of any major international organization such as the European Union or NATO, but it did have observer status at the United Nations. In addition to its diplomatic ties with other countries, Gambia also maintained strong economic ties with Senegal, which allowed for free movement of goods and services between the two countries.
