Yearbook 2007 Guyana. At the end of September, a specially appointed UN committee presented its proposal for resolving a long-standing border dispute between Guyana and Suriname. According to the Committee's recommendations, the disputed territorial waters of the Caribbean should be shared equally between the two countries. Guyana is thus believed to have received most of the major oil resources expected to be found in the area, but Suriname nevertheless accepted the proposal.
