According to ezinereligion, in 2007, Malawi had a population of approximately 13.1 million people, with the majority of them being ethnic Chewa and Tumbuka. The economy was largely dependent on agriculture, with tobacco and tea being the main exports. Foreign relations were generally positive in 2007, as Malawi had become a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and was actively seeking to join the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Politically, the country was led by President Bingu wa Mutharika who sought to promote economic growth through foreign investment and improved infrastructure.
