Copiah County, Mississippi is located in the central region of the state and is bordered by Lincoln County to the north, Lawrence County to the east, Simpson County to the south, and Hinds County to the west. With an area of 593 square miles, Copiah County has a population of approximately 28,000 people. According to theinternetfaqs.com, the county was founded in 1823 and named after a Choctaw chief who had been instrumental in negotiating peace between his tribe and white settlers. The county seat is Hazlehurst which was established in 1828.
