They were charged with participating in an armed uprising in the Caprivi Strip in 1999 and have been in custody since 2002. A parallel trial against 119 other people from Caprivi has been ongoing for several years. Former President Sam Nujoma resigned as chairman of the SWAPO (South West Africa People's Organization) government party, which he led since it was founded as a liberation movement in 1960.
