Despite protests against major shortcomings in the arrangements, the election was approved, and the ruling Labor Party with allies was declared victors with 124 of the 137 seats. French police opened an investigation against Republic of the Congo President Denis Sassou-Nguesso for suspected use of state funds in the purchase of private property in France. A French court also decided to resume the investigation of Sassou-Nguesso's suspected involvement in the disappearance of hundreds of returning Congolese refugees in 1999.
