Colleton County, South Carolina is located in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina and is home to a population of 38,000 people. The county was first established in 1769 and was named after Sir John Colleton, a member of the British Parliament. The county seat is Walterboro and the largest city is Edisto Beach. According to, the history of Colleton County dates back to the 1700s when it was part of Berkeley County until it was divided into four separate counties in 1785. During this time, several plantations were established which produced crops such as rice, cotton, and indigo.
