According to ezinereligion, in 2007, the population of Turkmenistan was estimated to be around 5.2 million people. The main ethnic groups were Turkmens, Uzbeks and Russians. The economy of Turkmenistan was largely based on oil and gas production, with agriculture providing supplementary income. In terms of foreign relations, Turkmenistan had strong ties with its Central Asian neighbors as well as Russia and the United States. In 2007, the President of Turkmenistan was Saparmurat Niyazov who oversaw the government's day-to-day operations.
