According to ezinereligion, in 2007, Ukraine had an estimated population of 46 million people. The economy was largely based on the agricultural sector and heavy industry and mining. Ukraine's foreign relations were mainly with its post-Soviet neighbours, such as Russia, Belarus and Moldova. In 2007, the country was led by President Viktor Yushchenko, who was elected in 2004 in a fiercely contested election against Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych. Yushchenko's presidency saw a number of reforms to the political system and economy in an effort to move the country closer to European Union standards.
